All the flights were booked, so instead we hired a driver to take us down the the closest port town (a grueling 6-hour drive). There was NOTHING for tourists in this town...we were lucky to find a place to eat dinner and even that was sketchy. We figured we could survive one night since we'd be in paradise the next day...or not! The woke to find that ferries weren't running because of high winds and of course all flights were still booked. We were stuck in "Rach Gia", somewhere down on the Mekong Delta...but far from anywhere we really wanted to be.
After one day and two helish nights in Rach Gia, we finally got a ferry...paradise, just two hours away!
It really was paradise...the island of Phu Quoc is a dream come true for the weary traveler, made even more so by the fact that it's so hard to get to. The island felt half empty at all times, no doubt due to the shortage of reliable transportation to the island. Half empty was just fine for us...we made the most of the empty beach.
Sun, pools, waves, beach, golden tans, beach front restaurants and afternoon beers on the beach...yup, we've arrived! Not much else to say about Phu Quoc...except that I managed to get 3 massages and a mani/pedi for a total of $13!!!
